Description
Clear
liquid; colourless or slightly yellow unless a colour has been added. Has an
aromatic odour and a bitter taste.
Identification
A: To a solution (1 in 100)
add 2 N nitric acid or mercuric chloride TS: a white precipitate is formed,
and it is soluble in alcohol.
C: A solution of it in a
mixture of equal volumes of water and alcohol responds to the tests for Chloride <191>
Solutions
of chlorides yield with silver nitrate TS a white, curdy precipitate that is
insoluble in nitric acid but it is soluble in a slight excess of 6 N ammonium
hydroxide.
